When the Jaguars joined the NFL in 1995, I’ll be honest—I was confused. I mean, it was a brand new team in a brand new football league, why would the Jaguars come to the NFL? What was in it for them? Well, the Jaguars wanted to make their mark in the world of football and, more importantly, they wanted to give the state of Florida an NFL team of their own.
When the news first broke that the Jaguars were going to be joining the NFL I was ecstatic. To think that there was finally going to be a team in Florida that was part of the National Football League, it was too good to be true. I had followed the Jaguars since inception and was a huge fan, so my excitement was through the roof when I heard the news.
The Jaguars first season in the NFL was full of optimism. Even though they had a rookie head coach, Tom Coughlin, and a roster full of newcomers, the team had a lot of potential. The defense was led by middle linebacker Bryan Schwartz and the offense was led by quarterback Mark Brunell and wide receiver Jimmy Smith. The team finished the season with a record of 4-12. It wasn’t great, but it was a solid start for the franchise.
Despite the rocky first year, the Jaguars were already turning heads. We had a great running game, some exciting receivers, and a defense that could stand up to the best in the league. Everyone was predicting big things for the Jaguars in the coming years and the feeling throughout the state was that this team was destined for greatness.
Fast forward a few years and the Jaguars had become one of the best teams in the NFL. We were led by quarterback Mark Brunell and running back Fred Taylor. The defense was among the best in the league and the team had won two division titles and was on its way to winning a third. Every Sunday the stadium was packed and the atmosphere was electric. It was a great time to be a Jaguars fan.
It’s been almost 25 years since the Jaguars first joined the NFL and, looking back, I’m so glad they did. The team has been successful and the impact they have had on the state of Florida has been remarkable.We went from having no NFL team to having one of the best in the league and it has been amazing to be a part of it.
