Every April, the NFL Draft takes place and all sports fans are eagerly watching to find out which college player will be chosen first. It’s also pretty cool when Mr. Irrelevant is chosen last. For those of you who don’t know, Mr. Irrelevant is the nickname given to the last person chosen in the NFL draft. Can you imagine having that label? I can’t help but feel sorry for the guy. With a nickname like that, it wasn’t difficult to pinpoint who the last pick would be.
Now every year, the Mr Irrelevant award honors the last pick of the NFL draft. It’s both a recognition of the pick as well as a reminder that good things sometimes come to those who wait. It’s hard to even fathom that the last pick in the draft could possibly have a chance to lead their team to success or even be a starter. But, believe it or not, it happens.
Take former Mr Irrelevant winner Nate Hobbs for example. He was selected as the last pick of the 2020 draft by the Miami Dolphins. He went into the draft with low expectations but when given the opportunity to play he exceeded expectations. He became a starter for the Dolphins defense and ended up having an amazing season. Because of his performance, he was chosen as a Pro Bowl alternate.
This is why I’m always in awe when I see the Mr Irrelevant pick in the draft. It’s amazing how some of these players are able to defy all odds and become successful in the NFL. This is why no one should ever count out the last pick of the draft. Who knows what kind of an impact they could have in the NFL?
One such impactful player is Ryan Succop. He was a Mr Irrelevant pick in 2009 and went on to become a steady kicker for the Chiefs and Titans teams over the course of his career. He was a consistent performer and a fan favorite in both cities and is now headed to the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a finalist this year. See, Mr Irrelevant isn’t quite so irrelevant after all.
This just goes to show you that the last pick of the draft has the potential to be just as successful as any high first round pick. The key is for the player to stay hungry and motivated. With the right work ethic and dedication, anything is possible.
Another Mr Irrelevant story that is equally inspiring is the Washington Redskins cornerback, Greg Stroman. Stroman was the last pick of the 2018 NFL Draft. Being chosen dead last was not taken well by him at first. He used the negative reaction to fuel his determination and became one of the more consistent cornerbacks on the Redskins roster.
His story exemplifies the amazing talent in the nfl Jerseys draft and how even the last pick can carve out a successful pro career. It’s just a matter of ability and wanting to prove yourself that can lead to great success.
Sometimes on draft day we forget what this is all about: a chance to choose players to potentially turn their NFL dreams into a reality. For every Nate Hobbs and for every Greg Stroman, there are dozens of players who don’t get the chance to make that dream come true. So, don’t forget to cheer for Mr. Irrelevant too, as they embark on their NFL journey.
Even Mr Irrelevant deserves a chance to shine and he has the same potential for greatness as any other player. He has a platform to show the world what he can do and he is often overlooked as the last pick of the draft. It’s a reality check for all the players in the draft sport and no one should be counted out just because they’re taken last.
It takes courage, a resilient attitude and a lot of hard work to make it in the nfl Jerseys. These players need more recognition and support for their talent and as fans we should show them that support. We can’t forget these players doing their best against the odds!
No matter the pick you are cheering for, no player should be forgotten. Mr Irrelevant deserved to be appreciated for the hard work that he puts in and no one should count him out because of the jargon “Mr Irrelevant.” So, the next time you’re watching the NFL Draft, don’t forget to cheer for the last pick.
