I’ve been a football fanatic my entire life, and I’ve always had a deep appreciation for the art of a field goal. Growing up, I always looked forward to watching the NFL guys lining up to attempt that most difficult of kicks. To this day, it still fascinates me to watch how they measure out their steps, their approach to the ball, then back off and give one more examination of that ever-crucial block. They have one chance to get it right, and no matter how good they are or how many times they’ve done it before, there’s no guarantee that they can pull it off!
I remember watching the great kickers like Adam Vinatieri for the Patriots, and seeing the immense skill and concentration they had on each and every kick. Every tap of their foot, every twitch of their knee, every spin of their body–all of it was calculated with absolute precision. It was beautiful to watch, and it filled me with awe and admiration. The skill and control they had on the ball was something to behold.
But it’s more than just the mechanics of it all that make this art form so captivating. It’s the pressure of it all. The tension builds as the kicker lines up, and every second that passes intensifies the suspense. The silence in the stadium is intense, and everyone is holding their collective breath. You know the implications of this kick. It can decide the game in an instant, and send everyone’s adrenaline into overdrive. You can feel the tension as the ball comes flying off the foot and then suddenly–it’s either good or bad.
But the best part of it all is when you see the absolute joy on the kicker’s face when the ball sails through those uprights. I mean, they’ve just gone through all that hassle and then to get the payoff of having the crowd erupt into a chorus of cheers–it’s amazing! That kind of feeling of elation is something that no one can take away from them, and it’s a wonderful sight to behold.
Field goals aren’t just amazing feats of skill, they’re really a metaphor for life itself. It’s the idea of taking a risk and putting your faith in yourself, believing in yourself and your abilities, and having the courage to take a shot–even when the odds aren’t in your favor. The kicker never knows what the outcome will be until they’ve taken the shot; they must have the faith to take a risk if they ever want to experience the ultimate success.
Although my personal experiences with field goals are limited to what I’ve observed from afar, I’m still in awe of what these players can do. It’s like a magic show every time they trot out there and take that shot. It’s in these moments that you can really appreciate just how special a field goal can be. It’s a thrill, a challenge, and a metaphor for living life to its fullest.
